Termite Inspections and Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation and termite bonds can coexist.

Spray foam insulation is a best-in-class solution for insulating basements and crawl spaces. It offers one of the highest R-values available, while also air sealing your home without the need for additional products. By combining insulation and air sealing in one step, spray foam maximizes the energy efficiency of the building envelope.

However, spray foam insulation must always be installed in compliance with local building codes. In areas with heavy termite activity, this may involve specialized requirements such as:
Inspection strips at the base of the crawl space or basement walls
Removable insulation on the rim joist

These measures make termite inspections easier and help protect your home from potential damage. While spray foam does not attract termites or serve as a food source, termites can travel through it, which is why inspection access is important. This technical drawing demonstrates a solution to installing spray foam in crawlspace and providing the ability to conduct a visual termite inspection.

When installed correctly, spray foam insulation can significantly improve your home’s energy efficiency without compromising termite protection or the ability to obtain a termite warranty. The Spray Foam Coalition recommends consulting your pest management professional before altering insulation in a crawl space or basement.

Please Note: In 2021, Georgia incorporated these specialized termite-related requirements into the state building code. You can learn more about those requirements here.
